IT is not just for Geeks
Our 2nd guest speaker of the year was from "Dell", and she was invited to explain to our year group that having a career in I.T is not just for "geeks" and should be considered by everyone. She stressed the point that as technology progresses and continues to play more of a part in our everyday lives, it is creating more and more job opportunities in the I.T sector for people to explore.
She told us how she did not originally plan to follow a career in I.T, but only turned to the course when not achieving the results necessary for her chosen course. Her story highlights the fact that a career in I.T isn't just for those who would be considered "computer geeks". Her interest in pursuing a career in I.T came later in life, yet she was able to learn the skills necessary to excel in her sector.
She was accompanied by a young man who also informed us about his education and how he ended up in I.T. Together they explained that there are endless possibilities when pursing a career in I.T, and to not discard it if you are not necessarily interested in computers.
They also touched on the point that 70% of the I.T sector are male, leaving a staggeringly low figure of just 30% female workers. They hope to achieve a more balanced figure, and so encouraged girls in our year group to get involved and their think about a future in I.T.
Overall, the talk was very helpful and eye opening the possibilities available, if we decide to chose a career down this path. Personally, I am now much more open to the idea of working in this sector in the future.

Wellbeing Week
Simon Harris
The Minister for Health, Simon Harris kick started our Well being week, with a talk to our school on how to stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. He introduced a new style food pyramid, which is regarded as more modern than the previous one. He also ran through different ways of keeping fit, even if you are not a sporty person. In all it was a helpful talk and I took some valuable points away with me.
Alison Canavan
We also enjoyed a speech from supermodel Alison Canavan, on the first day of our well being week. She discussed her life experiences and the obstacles she overcame to get where she is. She mentioned issues of alcohol and drug abuse during her teenage years, and how this had an affect on her mental health. However, she was able to overcome this difficulties and excel in her career.
We did a light meditation session, as she believed it was a key factor in her recovery. It was a very enjoyable and relaxing exercise. It was a very insightful talk and interesting to hear of her own personal experiences.
Mini Company
In hope of helping us to develop our 'Mini Companies', a Guest speaker was invited into our school, to give us additional information regarding our companies. She spoke to our year group as a whole, producing a slideshow to teach us about the importance of the project, and how it can help us in the future. She also spoke of the awards available to us if we work hard with this and produce a product or service worthy of winning the Student Enterprise competition.
Her advice was very helpful for me, as I'm sure it was for others in the room too. She helped with possible ideas, which we could use and eventually develop into our own Mini Company. For others who may have already had an idea in mind, myself included, she helped us finalise our ideas.
She discussed previous winners of the competition also, which gave us all a great insight into the types of ideas they are looking for, and how to excel in the competition. In all, I learned a lot from her speech, and will use this additional information to improve my Mini Company.

Tiglin
Tiglin is an organisation that works with the homeless, helping to provide food and a place to stay. They also offer the first steps to recovery for homeless people looking to get their lives back on track. A worker in the organisation came to our school, along with another volunteer who used to be homeless, before Tiglin helped him turn his life around. He told us his story, from difficulties at home, to living on the streets as a teen and troubles with alcohol and drugs. It was a very powerful and moving story, and really highlights the good work organisations such as these do.
